Health and safety courses.

Five short narrated awareness courses for everyday workplace risks: health and safety basics, manual handling, slips, trips and falls, display screen equipment and hazardous substances. Each takes about 17 or 18 minutes, ends with a 10-question check and gives a certificate on passing.

Why it matters

Information, instruction and training, in short bursts.

Under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, employers must provide the information, instruction, training and supervision needed to keep people healthy and safe at work, so far as is reasonably practicable. The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 add that training should be given when people start, and again when the risks they face change.

Each course follows the law and HSE guidance for its subject: the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992, the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, the Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 and the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH), with accident reporting under RIDDOR 2013.

All five run fully online, so new starters can complete them in their first week, and refreshers can be assigned when certificates run out after a year.

These are awareness courses. They give everyone a shared grounding in the law and good practice, but they do not replace your own risk assessments or the site-specific instruction, training and supervision people need for their actual work. Practical skills, such as lifting technique for the loads your team really handles, are best practised in person.
